I am losing friends left and right, well, actually, only left. Some friendships, however, have been strengthened during this election.
When I was 6, I learned a song: "Make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other's gold." Even as a child, I was a born raconteur, so I always had lots of friends. But, by the time I got to fourth grade, I was already getting into political brawls. Early on, I began living my politically active mother's joke, "My name, it opens some doors and closes others."
I learned to tone it down a bit by the time I got to college. As a theater major, it was fun in an acting class one day, when we each had to pretend to be another student. I chose to mimic a beautiful petite girl with long dark hair. She was my polar opposite, this former cheerleader-turned-hippie-princess named Michelle. She got a kick out of my impression of her. I thought it was cool that she could laugh at herself. We began a friendship that has brought us to the present day.
Yet we were always opposites. I am Roman Catholic, she is Jewish. I am tall, she is short. One rainy afternoon on campus, Michelle insisted on carrying the umbrella for both of us, (I don't think I stood up straight until the next day!)
Back then, she was as passionate a Democrat as I was a Republican. However, my friend and I still had something in common that was more important than all the differences. We shared the same values and they showed up in a dozen little ways. That is why we are friends almost 30 years later. Furthermore, she had been moving in my direction politically before, but Sept. 11, 20xx, brought us to a new level of communication. We have bonded even more during this election.
Sadly, I also have re-evaluated some other friendships as tensions increased due to the Kerry-Edwards demagoguery. This is the first time in memory that I've even been appalled by both spouses of the Democratic ticket. I rather liked Tipper Gore and Hadassa Lieberman. I thought they were sweet. And that's the way I used to feel about my liberal pals. But, now a Teresa Heinz-Kerry-like irrationality/Elizabeth Edwards snotty innuendo has infected some of them -- and it makes them unpleasant to be around.
This election may leave those friendships in its wake. The outlook is definitely not good for their Christmas card inclusion.
Sept. 11, Iraq, the demonization of Israel by Kerry's European fans, the beheadings -- all of the latter just doesn't seem to change the '90s mentality of those I know who are voting for the Democratic Party ticket. Like Kerry, they still seem to consider the United States' life-and-death struggle a nuisance. These liberal friends of mine are certainly not bad people, but deep down, they still don't get that we are at war with a greater evil than any of us has ever known. Combined with the extremism culturally on the left, these people are becoming more than a nuisance themselves.
The sobering fact is that these friendships are just too taxing (in both senses of that word). Those relationships have become like old prom dresses in that they just don't fit anymore. There comes a point where some associations can become a fire hazard in one's closet. It may be time to do spring cleaning, even if the season is autumn.
Sure, friends can't agree on everything, nor are they supposed to but though I may think someone's a nice person, fun, etc., increasingly deep differences in our world view can't be ignored in these frightening times.
Three decades later, Michelle is no longer the shorter-than-me actress who insisted on carrying the umbrella as we walked to class, though she is still shorter than me. But she and I easily walk together under an umbrella of shared concerns. A few weeks ago we sat side by side at a most moving event celebrating Jewish and Christian support of Israel and each other.
Yet, we still live very different lives. My college friend has been married for 25 years to the love of her life, the mother of three and an executive in an entertainment corporation. And meanwhile her single free-lancing writer/actress friend, even after all these years still does impressions of her only in print now.
Happily, others have also come along to become comrades in arms this election. They represent a diversity in lifestyle that would warm any liberal's heart (although said liberal wouldn't warm our hearts). There's Genie the stockbroker, Cathy the casting director, Robin the mom of one of my former acting students, Sally the daughter of one of my mother's old friends and many others. Their e-mail messages and calls let me know that though other friendships may wither during this election, I'm hardly alone. They all have a point of view that enables us to skip to shorthand. ("Did you read Drudge?" "Yep!") All of these women make up my own personal non-elitist version of "The View, The Conservative Cut."
Yes, now those old children's lyrics resonate with a new meaning in "Make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other is gold." Regretfully, without shared values even after this tumultuous election of 20xx, some friendships may have turned to a tin that rings hollow in these perilous times.
By the way, I recently chatted with one of those former Brownies who sang with me so long ago, She is a "security mom." She is voting for George W. Bush and she will definitely be included on my Christmas card list.
my dream
everyone has a dream. i often ask myself. when i was a little boy, i wanted to be a soldier with a gun so that i could defend our motherland.now i am a young boy with a new dream——to be a doctor. i want to be a famous doctor, helping the sick and saving their lives.
i also saw some people who were suffering and dying of ill-nesses. i made up my mind to become a doctor, so that i can help the sick people and cure them of their diseases. china is a develop-ing country. she needs good medicine and good doctors, especially in the countryside and lonely villages.
i want to try my best to help the poor sick people of our country. i want to let them have an opportunity to receive excel-lent treatments for their illnesses without having to pay much or any money.
Time, was a strange thing, it makes all sickness and death. When there is something born of time, from that moment the beginning of time has passed. How to we do? We can only seize the opportunity to seize life, to do the masters of their own destiny.
I have thought about a problem, what is time? I think that time is of the mind in life when the runway, and it is responsible for the completion of a mission of a subdivision.
Can not recover the past, the past is a good time regardless, or painful and have to stay in our memory, our experience has enriched and matured our thinking. Occasionally, the memories, can regulate our emotions, purify our hearts. Has been really obsessed with old things is not desirable because it is more important now.
I read a Soviet writer Nicholas? Alec? Ostrovsky's book "How to Make Steel", I was moved to this section of the article so that impressed me: "Life belongs to the people only once. one's life should be spent this way: when he look back, he does not regret the years wasted, not because of the shame . Thus, in death, he will be able to say : 'I own a whole life and energies are dedicated to the world's most magnificent cause - the cause of humanity andthe struggle of liberation. " Yes ah life time were more valuable it, especially the juvenile time. From now on, I have to cherish.
I've heard such a story: The pressure in the rubble and stones following a grass, it is a longing for the sun to reach it the will of Health, no matter how heavy stones above, between the rocks and stones How to narrow the gap, it always twists and turns, the tough and up through to the ground. Its root to the soil under the long shoots to the ground it stands, this is an irresistible force of life, to prevent its stones were thrown to the. Xiaocaohu a vitality so great that people can not help but sigh.
Yes ah, life will be like this, like the grass, no matter what circumstances, are making progress will never bow, the only way of life is the best, the most meaningful. Time is of the essence, time is gone forever, and we must treasure this good time, study hard, grow up, the effectiveness of the motherland. It is also the so-called "one inch by one inch gold time, gold-inch inch time. Let us cherish the time with it!
A proverb says,"Time is money." But in my opinion, time is even more precious than money. Why? Because when money is spent, we can earn it back. However, when time is gone, it will never return. This is the reason why we must value time.Collected by www.ii63·com
It goes without saying that the time for our study and work is unusually limited. Hence, even an hour is extremely precious. We should make full use of our time to do useful things. As a student,I must make efforts to engage in my study so as to serve our nation and people in the future. But it is a pity that there. are a lot of people who do not know the importance of time. They do not realize that wasting time is equal to wasting a part of their valuable life.collected by II63·com
In a word, we should form the good habit of saving time. Do not put off what can be done today till tomorrow. Laziness will not only bring us failure but also lead us to the road of poverty.

Good morning everyone, my name is ZhouChangsong and my partner YangWeijin and QiuShurong. Today, we will introduce the topic of travelling.
Ok, now my lecture has three parts. The first one is the history of traveling. The second is the ways of traveling and the last one is the impact of traveling.
Ok, it seems that traveling is a recent invention, but as a matter of fact, traveling exists since ancient times. And traveling activities rise in China as early as 22 century B.C. In the late Ming dynasty, a famous geographer and traveler—Xuxiake. When he was 22, he began traveling through all over the country. After 30 years, he traveled most cities and sight spots of China. The next one, Marco Polo, a famous traveler from Italian, his famous book ”The travels of Marco Polo” contains a large amount of information about an unknown world and its nations, have been described the flourish of Yuan dynasty.
Well, this is the picture of Xuxiake, this is the picture of Marco Polo and his book.
Ok, next, let me introduce the ways of traveling. As we all know, before we go travel, we should make a careful plan. First, we should choose the place we travel. There are four choices, the natural spot, the historic site, the countryside and big cities. Then we should plan how many days we travel, only several days or more than a week.
After we choose a place, we should choose the traffic to go travel. If the way is not very long, we can travel on foot, it is safe and easiness, but you should take enough food and water. If you have a car, you can drive it of course, it will be very exciting and you can enjoy the roadside scenery. If you travel abroad or a long distance you can travel by ship or by plane. Well, in the near future, people can travel to other stars. A survey show that 11% people believe that it will possible to travel to the moon in 20xx. At last, you should choose the people you travel with. You travel with your family, travel with your friends, or travel alone or join a travel group.
Ok, now let me introduce the impact of traveling. It includes the impact to individual and the impact to our society and economy.
Well, there are many advantages of traveling. Travel can widen our knowledge of geography and the knowledge of cultures and customs. And we can experience the lifestyles of different places and countries. The most important, we can see many different beautiful sceneries and it will be a good memory in our future life. Well, travel is take exercise and it can build up our body. We can make many different friends through traveling and it is a good way to free our life and relax after busy work and study. Many cities have its feature snakes, when we travel, we can enjoy many delicious food. WuHan, for example, hot-and-dry noodles, duck necks are very delicious.
Well, there are some disadvantages of traveling. Travel can waste many time and money, especially when you join a travel group. And it has higher prices for transportation. Sometimes travelers are not very safe when they travel and safety is the most important problem.
Well, scenery spots can benefit a lot and tourism can promote economic development. And travel can promote the communication between different nations and cultures. And a famous spot can make a city more famous, for example, Hangzhou is famous for the west lake and Wuhan is famous for the east lake. This is the east lake.
On the other hand, traveling has some disadvantages to our society. More and more people choose to travel on holiday and it becomes a burden to our inefficient transportation system. Well, some people damage scenic spot and influence the economy and environment. To solve these problems, government should make related laws and visitors should improve the awareness to protect the economy and environment. Then we will ensure the sustainable development of tourism. Thank you!

My idol is not the teacher nor tireless in teaching others, worship the renowned star light, but my mother has been bred.
I remember when I was a child, I was born sick. I closed my eyes, quietly on the bed rest. Sometimes my brow, and breathing heavily, the pain of torture made her lose vitality. Mother saw my face pale without a trace of blood, an_ious in mind, and finally, my mother made up her mind to take me to the doctor.
Mom called me from the bed, so I got up and struggled to sit up in bed, pale face was contorted with pain, thin sweat oozed from his forehead, as if every move is great torment. Get out of bed, my mother took me out to the bus station, I saw neither fast nor slow to move forward, and her mother an_ious to go, I fear that the disease was delayed. We just got on the bus. Unfortunately, God changed his face and it began to rain cats and dogs. As if the broken line of pearls fell down one by one. There were two people in the car, one of whom was drenched through the side window, and the other was affected a bit. The mother took the bag towel wipe, then hesitated, because if she chooses to let me sit in the wet chair, and he sat ne_t to the position, is impossible, I'm afraid no mother will do it. But if Mom chooses to keep our mother and daughter standing, I can't stand even when I'm sick, let alone the rickety car! My mother sat bravely in the drenched position, letting me sit ne_t to her and blocking my rain with a huge body. This time I go, unaware. It's raining harder and harder as if to drown the world. My mother shivered, but I didn't look at it. The young I begin to cry, the mother said: “ a mother, I want to change my seat with you, I want to see the scenery. &rdquo: I looked at my mother with innocent eyes, but my mother shook her head resolutely, without hesitation. I pursed a small mouth, lit the sulk. To the hospital, we got off the bus, I stared at my mother with resentment eyes, but saw the mother's right has been wet, I suddenly tears, hugged her mother said: “ I'm sorry, mom, I never so headstrong ”. Mom said, "&ldquo, it doesn't matter. You're sick. I can't let you get wet in the rain, &rdquo.";. Say and smile.
Mother's love for me is so holy, so noble, so selfless. Isn't that enough to be my idol?
Good morning, everyone! This week, we are going to learn a new topic——the Aims of Education. Differ from Whitehea d ’s idea; I think the aim of education is to help people form a lifelong learning consciousness. In my eyes, education is not an end, but a means to an end. In other words, we do not educate children only for teaching them knowledge but to help them form a lifelong learning consciousness.
We can see that, as education appeared, the aim of it has always been a hot topic to human beings, especially the great thinkers. Their ideas towards the aim of education reflect the educational changes in human society. That is to say the aim of education is not static . In ancient Greek, Aristotle thought that “Education must aim at the development of the full potentialities of each man”. Later, it developed into the idea of training young people to be well -educated gentlemen or citizens in Henry Newman’s work The Idea of a University.
As the society develops, the aim of education has taken in new meanings and implications-----to educate and train people to be all-roundly cultivated persons. To achieve this goal, one has to spend his whole life to learn. However, in the usual case people just spend some years on study in schools or universities. After they leave school, they seldom pick up books. Now the government is advocating building a “learning society”. It provides people chances to do some continuous learning in other schools besides the formal ones, like night schools.
In fact, the idea that education should be throughout a person’s life has been existing for a long time. In China, it can be traced further back to “the Analects of Confucius”. Confucius said, “If some years were added to my life, I would give fifty to the study of the Yi, and then I might come be without great faults”. This indicates his idea of lifelong learning. Besides, some famous western philosophers also held the idea that individual education should be a continuous process. For example, the great thinker Aristotle claimed that “Education is the best provision for the journey to old age”. These claims above show that those great educators take education as a long term task.
Unfortunately, the time that people spend in schools or universities is limited, so is the knowledge they can learn in the formal schooling. As a result, it is significant for teacher to promote learner autonomy and guide students to form a lifelong learning consciousness in school. But usually people do not take it serious until they leave school. I would like to take my elder cousin as an example.
My elder cousin went to a professional school after he graduated from high school. One year later, he became a workman in a factory. He was satisfied with the job and stopped learning. Yet as time goes by, now he feels that the task is beginning to exceed his ability. This is not a single case happen to those “graduates”.
Nowadays, more and more people realize this problem and start to take some measures to solve it. In order to get a higher degree, people take some courses on the Internet or go to night schools to do their further study. Such being the case, why not help people build up their consciousness of lifelong learning when they are still in school? Thus they can do some preparation and try their best to create opportunities for further study even after they leave school.
To conclude, the aim of education ought to educate people to consider education as a continuous process and form this consciousness in school so that people can receive any kind of education in any time or anywhere to adapt to the development of society.
Dear leaders, teachers and students
hello everyone! In the twinkling of an eye, another group of familiar faceswill leave the campus with the memories of four years of University. Four yearsin a hurry, freshman's green and ignorant, sophomore's hard work, Junior's hardwork seem to be still in front of us. We haven't enjoyed it yet, but we have towave our hands gently to say goodbye to our brothers and sisters who have cried, laughed and quarreled, and to say goodbye to our lost and struggling campusyouth.
Perhaps the most proud thing in the university is to stick to and realizetheir dreams, to harvest sweet love, to meet a confidant. There are regrets andregrets. The loss of strength in the competition, the failure in theexamination, the small friction between students, and so on, are also adjustingthe University bowl of mixed soup. Of course, there will be a lot of insights.Zou Jiao, a senior of journalism school, told reporters: "I think we shouldstudy hard from freshman to senior, combine work with rest, and learn and playtogether. Freshmen should adapt to college life, learn to be independent, readmore, make more friends, and lay a good foundation. Sophomores think about whatthey want to do, determine the general direction, and make preliminarypreparations. Juniors can practice according to what they have learned before, and make the final sprint for the road they choose. As a senior, on the onehand, you should calmly wait for the results of your efforts; on the other hand, you can do things you didn't have time to do before. " These insights provide agood reference for the younger students, promote them to be positive and createa colorful and regretless university life.
I always believe that farewell is for a better meeting next time. Enteringthe competitive society, we can really see the crowded recruitment hall, orreally feel the pressure of postgraduate entrance examination. We haveencountered problems that we have never met before, and opened the curtain ofanother life scene. It is understood that this year, the number of graduatesnationwide has reached 6.99 million, which is jokingly known as "the mostdifficult year for employment in history", and the competitive pressure can beimagined. At the same time, driven by serious practical problems such as income, many college students believe that they can get into banks, state-ownedenterprises or institutions for 200000 yuan, which not only breaks the dream of"iron rice bowl", but also pushes themselves into a deeper abyss. Although thereare many urgent social problems to be solved, it is urgent to correct the ideasof many college students. It is absolutely not feasible to take advantage of theback door and trust the relationship, which not only harms the individual, butalso destroys the social atmosphere.
If you want to get ahead, college graduates should not despise the high andlow position, 360 line, line out of the top, as long as down-to-earth, do a goodjob at the work at hand, accumulate more experience, there will be a future. It's time to say goodbye again, but goodbye is for meeting again. After a fewyears, more than a decade or more, when everyone has accepted the tempering ofsociety and life, when everyone has become mature and excellent, when each has anew life, when we meet again and smile, we are still friends, there are stillreasons to embrace, because friendship lasts forever, because youth is worthremembering.
Graduation song gradually ring, has not left, but has begun to miss. Youthwill eventually pass away, no need to be sad, no need to panic, it will beforever engraved in the years, into a warm force, let the road ahead full ofinfinite sunshine because of memories.
This concludes my speech. Thank you!

Should Smoking in Public Places be Banned?
Nowadays many countries in the world have passed laws to ban smoking in public places. Some smokers claim that their rights are infringed if smoking is forbidden in public places. However, most non-smokers regard the ban as good news. As far as I’m concerned, smoking should be banned in all the public places such as restaurants, theaters and public squares.
On the one hand, smoking is harmful both for smokers themselves and others. It is reported that every year smoking causes millions of death around the world. On the other hand, smoking pollutes the air. Just imagine that you sit in a restaurant full of smoke, how can you enjoy your meal there? Besides, smoking is bad for the elevation of a country’s image in the world.
I believe if smoking is banned in all the public places, most of us will breathe in more fresh and clean air. And the health condition of all the people will be greatly improved.

Good afternoon honorable judges and beloved friends. My topic today is "Embracing the World, Embracing sports".
Since MaLong and Zhangjike’s breathtaking triumph over all the opponents in Rio, no matter in competition or in real life, their loving little interactions, has already captured the heart of thousands of girls from home and abroad. Are you still obsessed with a bunch of pop stars in entertainment industry ?SinceFuyuanhui told CCTV reporter. "Ive been utilizing prehistorical powers." Are you still believe in the traditional sports concept that "winner-takes-all" or "victory only belongs to the winners"? When Sunyang didn’t won the champion of 1500-meter freestyle swimming match, but stick to the last minutes enduring the pain of physical sickness, are you still accusing him of not winning honor for our country? Of course, no!
Because of the nationwide sports system in our country, we always attach great importance to the glory of the most high-necked award platform, requiring athletes to win the game. I still remember that in 20__, Liu Xiang dropped out because of the serious injury in his Achilless tendon, but he grit his teeth and stick to the end, bearing all the pain and pressure we may never know. However, someone mock him that he is no longer the Asian flier anymore, some even said that his injury was just put on a show, suddenly he turned from a national hero into a loser, just because he upset the whole country of not winning one game.
From "medal only" to enjoy the charm and joy of the competitive sports, from requiring athletes to win the game to sincerely admire the noble-character and charming personality of them. This maybe one small step for 20__ Rio Olympic, but one giant leap for the Chinese national sport spirit. Who can say this is not the mistery of sport? who can say this is not the power of sport? And who can say this is not the charm of sport?
So, ladies and gentlemen, lets embrace the world with the charm of sports!
Dear teachers, dear students:
hello everyone!
The topic of my speech is "the hardness of life"
The vast desert, a tree stand, the show is a monument to the image.
Towering mountains, thousands of tree stand up, as is a magnificent the Great Wall.
The long river, all the trees stood up into a dragon of glory.
We are a symbol of too much, and too much. But I believe that my image is not "the gentlest hands, skin, such as Diorskin" Lin Daiyu, nor is the modern "unkempt and shabby", "Su Qier". We are a symbol of hope and vitality. So we show in front of others should be inserted without pleats, face without scale, modest and polite gestures exudes a stream of heroic spirit, the image of the vigor and vitality of the modern new youth, a into the embodiment of the spirit of nature.
Someone once said, life is a kind of hardness, integrity and dignity of life is propped up the hardness of bone. "Better life" and "the Kui back in the day, and not ashamed on the ground", which is always the traditional virtue of the China. Li Bai's "the eyebrow nengcui Zheyaoshan powerful thing, so that I may not be happy Yan" this awe inspiring atmosphere of the verse and whether it will make those no self-esteem people to shame? Loss of self-esteem is a worthless person, and we as the vanguard of the times, if drown in the darkness forever, or to do a dauntless hero, a flower in the wind and rain sonorous rose. The answer is self-evident.
Desert desolate also has the monument stands, Castle Peak again proud, but also have the great wall around, the river again quiet, also there is a dragon in the recumbent. But the time can be changed, our image, our glory remains the same. Because we pride, because we are confident, because we have a fresh life. And because of this, it is a vast desert riparian long, Qingshan was evergreen, the hardness of life is forever.
I have a dreamHello everyone, my name is Xiaoming and I come from the second grade of sixth grade. The topic of my speech today is that I have a dream.
"I have a dream" is a famous speech delivered by Martin Luther King Jr. at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington on August 28, 1963. The content is mainly about black national equality. It has a great influence on the United States and the world.
I want to be a doctor. This year is a special year. Disease has become a topic that everyone often talks about, and doctors have become unsung heroes. They fight the sickness day and night, in exchange for a safe and healthy life for us. So when I grow up, I also want to be a doctor and contribute my own strength. So now I have to study hard, because only if my knowledge reserve is strong enough, it is possible to contribute my strength someday in the future.
Thank you all for finishing my speech.
Life isnt about keeping score. Its not about how many friends you have or how accepted you are.
Not about if you have plans this weekend or if youre alone.
It isnt about who youre dating, who you used to date, how many people youve dated, or if you havent beem with anyone at all.
It isnt about who you have kissed.
Its not about sex.
It isnt about who your family is or how much money they have Or what kind of car you drive.
Or where you are sent to school.
Its not about how beautiful or ugly you are.
Or what clothes you wear, what shoes you have on, or what kind of music you listen to.
Its not about if your hair is blonde, red, black, or brown or if your skin is too light or too dark.
Not about what grades you get, how smart you are, how smart everybody else thinks you are, or how smart standardized tests say you are.
Its not about representing your whole being on a piece of paper and seeing who will "accept the written you."
What I'd like to do today is talk about one of my favorite subjects, and that is the neuroscience of sleep.
Now, there is a sound -- (Alarm clock) -- aah, it worked -- a sound that is desperately, desperately familiar to most of us, and of course it's the sound of the alarm clock. And what that truly ghastly, awful sound does is stop the single most important behavioral experience that we have, and that's sleep. If you're an average sort of person, 36 percent of your life will be spent asleep, which means that if you live to 90, then 32 years will have been spent entirely asleep.
Now what that 32 years is telling us is that sleep at some level is important. And yet, for most of us, we don't give sleep a second thought. We throw it away. We really just don't think about sleep. And so what I'd like to do today is change your views, change your ideas and your thoughts about sleep. And the journey that I want to take you on, we need to start by going back in time.
"Enjoy the honey-heavy dew of slumber." Any ideas who said that? Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. Yes, let me give you a few more quotes. "O sleep, O gentle sleep, nature's soft nurse, how have I frighted thee?" Shakespeare again, from -- I won't say it -- the Scottish play. [Correction: Henry IV, Part 2] (Laughter) From the same time: "Sleep is the golden chain that ties health and our bodies together." Extremely prophetic, by Thomas Dekker, another Elizabethan dramatist.
But if we jump forward 400 years, the tone about sleep changes somewhat. This is from Thomas Edison, from the beginning of the 20th century. "Sleep is a criminal waste of time and a heritage from our cave days." Bang. (Laughter) And if we also jump into the 1980s, some of you may remember that Margaret Thatcher was reported to have said, "Sleep is for wimps." And of course the infamous -- what was his name? -- the infamous Gordon Gekko from "Wall Street" said, "Money never sleeps."
What do we do in the 20th century about sleep? Well, of course, we use Thomas Edison's light bulb to invade the night, and we occupied the dark, and in the process of this occupation, we've treated sleep as an illness, almost. We've treated it as an enemy. At most now, I suppose, we tolerate the need for sleep, and at worst perhaps many of us think of sleep as an illness that needs some sort of a cure. And our ignorance about sleep is really quite profound.
Why is it? Why do we abandon sleep in our thoughts? Well, it's because you don't do anything much while you're asleep, it seems. You don't eat. You don't drink. And you don't have sex. Well, most of us anyway. And so therefore it's -- Sorry. It's a complete waste of time, right? Wrong. Actually, sleep is an incredibly important part of our biology, and neuroscientists are beginning to explain why it's so very important. So let's move to the brain.
Now, here we have a brain. This is donated by a social scientist, and they said they didn't know what it was, or indeed how to use it, so -- (Laughter) Sorry. So I borrowed it. I don't think they noticed. Okay. (Laughter)
The point I'm trying to make is that when you're asleep, this thing doesn't shut down. In fact, some areas of the brain are actually more active during the sleep state than during the wake state. The other thing that's really important about sleep is that it doesn't arise from a single structure within the brain, but is to some extent a network property, and if we flip the brain on its back -- I love this little bit of spinal cord here -- this bit here is the hypothalamus, and right under there is a whole raft of interesting structures, not least the biological clock. The biological clock tells us when it's good to be up, when it's good to be asleep, and what that structure does is interact with a whole raft of other areas within the hypothalamus, the lateral hypothalamus, the ventrolateral preoptic nuclei. All of those combine, and they send projections down to the brain stem here. The brain stem then projects forward and bathes the cortex, this wonderfully wrinkly bit over here, with neurotransmitters that keep us awake and essentially provide us with our consciousness. So sleep arises from a whole raft of different interactions within the brain, and essentially, sleep is turned on and off as a result of a range of
Okay. So where have we got to? We've said that sleep is complicated and it takes 32 years of our life. But what I haven't explained is what sleep is about. So why do we sleep? And it won't surprise any of you that, of course, the scientists, we don't have a consensus. There are dozens of different ideas about why we sleep, and I'm going to outline three of those.
The first is sort of the restoration idea, and it's somewhat intuitive. Essentially, all the stuff we've burned up during the day, we restore, we replace, we rebuild during the night. And indeed, as an explanation, it goes back to Aristotle, so that's, what, 2,300 years ago. It's gone in and out of fashion. It's fashionable at the moment because what's been shown is that within the brain, a whole raft of genes have been shown to be turned on only during sleep, and those genes are associated with restoration and metabolic pathways. So there's good evidence for the whole restoration hypothesis.
What about energy conservation? Again, perhaps intuitive. You essentially sleep to save calories. Now, when you do the sums, though, it doesn't really pan out. If you compare an individual who has slept at night, or stayed awake and hasn't moved very much, the energy saving of sleeping is about 110 calories a night. Now, that's the equivalent of a hot dog bun. Now, I would say that a hot dog bun is kind of a meager return for such a complicated and demanding behavior as sleep. So I'm less convinced by the energy conservation idea.
But the third idea I'm quite attracted to, which is brain processing and memory consolidation. What we know is that, if after you've tried to learn a task, and you sleep-deprive individuals, the ability to learn that task is smashed. It's really hugely attenuated. So sleep and memory consolidation is also very important. However, it's not just the laying down of memory and recalling it. What's turned out to be really exciting is that our ability to come up with novel solutions to complex problems is hugely enhanced by a night of sleep. In fact, it's been estimated to give us a threefold advantage. Sleeping at night enhances our creativity. And what seems to be going on is that, in the brain, those neural connections that are important, those synaptic connections that are important, are linked and strengthened, while those that are less important tend to fade away and be less important.
Okay. So we've had three explanations for why we might sleep, and I think the important thing to realize is that the details will vary, and it's probable we sleep for multiple different reasons. But sleep is not an indulgence. It's not some sort of thing that we can take on board rather casually. I think that sleep was once likened to an upgrade from economy to business class, you know, the equiavlent of. It's not even an upgrade from economy to first class. The critical thing to realize is that if you don't sleep, you don't fly. Essentially, you never get there, and what's extraordinary about much of our society these days is that we are desperately sleep-deprived.
So let's now look at sleep deprivation. Huge sectors of society are sleep-deprived, and let's look at our sleep-o-meter. So in the 1950s, good data suggests that most of us were getting around about eight hours of sleep a night. Nowadays, we sleep one and a half to two hours less every night, so we're in the six-and-a-half-hours-every-night league. For teenagers, it's worse, much worse. They need nine hours for full brain performance, and many of them, on a school night, are only getting five hours of sleep. It's simply not enough. If we think about other sectors of society, the aged, if you are aged, then your ability to sleep in a single block is somewhat disrupted, and many sleep, again, less than five hours a night. Shift work. Shift work is extraordinary, perhaps 20 percent of the working population, and the body clock does not shift to the demands of working at night. It's locked onto the same light-dark cycle as the rest of us. So when the poor old shift worker is going home to try and sleep during the day, desperately tired, the body clock is saying, "Wake up. This is the time to be awake." So the quality of sleep that you get as a night shift worker is usually very poor, again in that sort of five-hour region. And then, of course, tens of millions of people suffer from jet lag. So who here has jet lag? Well, my goodness gracious. Well, thank you very much indeed for not falling asleep, because that's what your brain is craving.
One of the things that the brain does is indulge in micro-sleeps, this involuntary falling asleep, and you have essentially no control over it. Now, micro-sleeps can be sort of somewhat embarrassing, but they can also be deadly. It's been estimated that 31 percent of drivers will fall asleep at the wheel at least once in their life, and in the U.S., the statistics are pretty good: 100,000 accidents on the freeway have been associated with tiredness, loss of vigilance, and falling asleep. A hundred thousand a year. It's extraordinary. At another level of terror, we dip into the tragic accidents at Chernobyl and indeed the space shuttle Challenger, which was so tragically lost. And in the investigations that followed those disasters, poor judgment as a result of extended shift work and loss of vigilance and tiredness was attributed to a big chunk of those disasters.
So when you're tired, and you lack sleep, you have poor memory, you have poor creativity, you have increased impulsiveness, and you have overall poor judgment. But my friends, it's so much worse than that.
(Laughter)
If you are a tired brain, the brain is craving things to wake it up. So drugs, stimulants. Caffeine represents the stimulant of choice across much of the Western world. Much of the day is fueled by caffeine, and if you're a really naughty tired brain, nicotine. And of course, you're fueling the waking state with these stimulants, and then of course it gets to 11 o'clock at night, and the brain says to itself, "Ah, well actually, I need to be asleep fairly shortly. What do we do about that when I'm feeling completely wired?" Well, of course, you then resort to alcohol. Now alcohol, short-term, you know, once or twice, to use to mildly sedate you, can be very useful. It can actually ease the sleep transition. But what you must be so aware of is that alcohol doesn't provide sleep, a biological mimic for sleep. It sedates you. So it actually harms some of the neural proccessing that's going on during memory consolidation and memory recall. So it's a short-term acute measure, but for goodness sake, don't become addicted to alcohol as a way of getting to sleep every night.
Another connection between loss of sleep is weight gain. If you sleep around about five hours or less every night, then you have a 50 percent likelihood of being obese. What's the connection here? Well, sleep loss seems to give rise to the release of the hormone ghrelin, the hunger hormone. Ghrelin is released. It gets to the brain. The brain says, "I need carbohydrates," and what it does is seek out carbohydrates and particularly sugars. So there's a link between tiredness and the metabolic predisposition for weight gain.
Stress. Tired people are massively stressed. And one of the things of stress, of course, is loss of memory, which is what I sort of just then had a little lapse of. But stress is so much more. So if you're acutely stressed, not a great problem, but it's sustained stress associated with sleep loss that's the problem. So sustained stress leads to suppressed immunity, and so tired people tend to have higher rates of overall infection, and there's some very good studies showing that shift workers, for example, have higher rates of cancer. Increased levels of stress throw glucose into the circulation. Glucose becomes a dominant part of the vasculature and essentially you become glucose intolerant. Therefore, diabetes 2. Stress increases cardiovascular disease as a result of raising blood pressure. So there's a whole raft of things associated with sleep loss that are more than just a mildly impaired brain, which is where I think most people think that sleep loss resides.
So at this point in the talk, this is a nice time to think, well, do you think on the whole I'm getting enough sleep? So a quick show of hands. Who feels that they're getting enough sleep here? Oh. Well, that's pretty impressive. Good. We'll talk more about that later, about what are your tips.
So most of us, of course, ask the question, "Well, how do I know whether I'm getting enough sleep?" Well, it's not rocket science. If you need an alarm clock to get you out of bed in the morning, if you are taking a long time to get up, if you need lots of stimulants, if you're grumpy, if you're irritable, if you're told by your work colleagues that you're looking tired and irritable, chances are you are sleep-deprived. Listen to them. Listen to yourself.
What do you do? Well -- and this is slightly offensive -- sleep for dummies: Make your bedroom a haven for sleep. The first critical thing is make it as dark as you possibly can, and also make it slightly cool. Very important. Actually, reduce your amount of light exposure at least half an hour before you go to bed. Light increases levels of alertness and will delay sleep. What's the last thing that most of us do before we go to bed? We stand in a massively lit bathroom looking into the mirror cleaning our teeth. It's the worst thing we can possibly do before we went to sleep. Turn off those mobile phones. Turn off those computers. Turn off all of those things that are also going to excite the brain. Try not to drink caffeine too late in the day, ideally not after lunch. Now, we've set about reducing light exposure before you go to bed, but light exposure in the morning is very good at setting the biological clock to the light-dark cycle. So seek out morning light. Basically, listen to yourself. Wind down. Do those sorts of things that you know are going to ease you off into the honey-heavy dew of slumber.
Okay. That's some facts. What about some myths?
Teenagers are lazy. No. Poor things. They have a biological predisposition to go to bed late and get up late, so give them a break.
We need eight hours of sleep a night. That's an average. Some people need more. Some people need less. And what you need to do is listen to your body. Do you need that much or do you need more? Simple as that.
Old people need less sleep. Not true. The sleep demands of the aged do not go down. Essentially, sleep fragments and becomes less robust, but sleep requirements do not go down.
And the fourth myth is, early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise. Well that's wrong at so many different levels. (Laughter) There is no, no evidence that getting up early and going to bed early gives you more wealth at all. There's no difference in socioeconomic status. In my experience, the only difference between morning people and evening people is that those people that get up in the morning early are just horribly smug.
(Laughter) (Applause)
Okay. So for the last part, the last few minutes, what I want to do is change gears and talk about some really new, breaking areas of neuroscience, which is the association between mental health, mental illness and sleep disruption. We've known for 130 years that in severe mental illness, there is always, always sleep disruption, but it's been largely ignored. In the 1970s, when people started to think about this again, they said, "Yes, well, of course you have sleep disruption in schizophrenia because they're on anti-psychotics. It's the anti-psychotics causing the sleep problems," ignoring the fact that for a hundred years previously, sleep disruption had been reported before anti-psychotics.
So what's going on? Lots of groups, several groups are studying conditions like depression, schizophrenia and bipolar, and what's going on in terms of sleep disruption. We have a big study which we published last year on schizophrenia, and the data were quite extraordinary. In those individuals with schizophrenia, much of the time, they were awake during the night phase and then they were asleep during the day. Other groups showed no 24-hour patterns whatsoever. Their sleep was absolutely smashed. And some had no ability to regulate their sleep by the light-dark cycle. They were getting up later and later and later and later each night. It was smashed.
So what's going on? And the really exciting news is that mental illness and sleep are not simply associated but they are physically linked within the brain. The neural networks that predispose you to normal sleep, give you normal sleep, and those that give you normal mental health are overlapping. And what's the evidence for that? Well, genes that have been shown to be very important in the generation of normal sleep, when mutated, when changed, also predispose individuals to mental health problems. And last year, we published a study which showed that a gene that's been linked to schizophrenia, which, when mutated, also smashes the sleep. So we have evidence of a genuine mechanistic overlap between these two important systems.
Other work flowed from these studies. The first was that sleep disruption actually precedes certain types of mental illness, and we've shown that in those young individuals who are at high risk of developing bipolar disorder, they already have a sleep abnormality prior to any clinical diagnosis of bipolar. The other bit of data was that sleep disruption may actually exacerbate, make worse the mental illness state. My colleague Dan Freeman has used a range of agents which have stabilized sleep and reduced levels of paranoia in those individuals by 50 percent.
So what have we got? We've got, in these connections, some really exciting things. In terms of the neuroscience, by understanding the neuroscience of these two systems, we're really beginning to understand how both sleep and mental illness are generated and regulated within the brain. The second area is that if we can use sleep and sleep disruption as an early warning signal, then we have the chance of going in. If we know that these individuals are vulnerable, early intervention then becomes possible. And the third, which I think is the most exciting, is that we can think of the sleep centers within the brain as a new therapeutic target. Stabilize sleep in those individuals who are vulnerable, we can certainly make them healthier, but also alleviate some of the appalling symptoms of mental illness.
So let me just finish. What I started by saying is take sleep seriously. Our attitudes toward sleep are so very different from a pre-industrial age, when we were almost wrapped in a duvet. We used to understand intuitively the importance of sleep. And this isn't some sort of crystal-waving nonsense. This is a pragmatic response to good health. If you have good sleep, it increases your concentration, attention, decision-making, creativity, social skills, health. If you get sleep, it reduces your mood changes, your stress, your levels of anger, your impulsivity, and your tendency to drink and take drugs. And we finished by saying that an understanding of the neuroscience of sleep is really informing the way we think about some of the causes of mental illness, and indeed is providing us new ways to treat these incredibly debilitating conditions.
Jim Butcher, the fantasy writer, said, "Sleep is God. Go worship." And I can only recommend that you do the same.
Thank you for your attention.
(Applause)
I take with me the memory of Friday afternoon ACM happy hours, known not for kegs of beer, but rather bowls of rainbow sherbet punch. Over the several years that I attended these happy hours they enjoyed varying degrees of popularity, often proportional to the quality and quantity of the accompanying refreshments - but there was always the rainbow sherbert punch.
I take with me memories of purple parking permits, the West Campus shuttle, checking my pendaflex, over-due library books, trying to print from cec, lunches on Delmar, friends who slept in their offices, miniature golf in Lopata Hall, The Greenway Talk, division III basketball, and trying to convince Dean Russel that yet another engineering school rule should be changed.
Finally, I would like to conclude, not with a memory, but with some advice. What would a graduation speech be without a little advice, right? Anyway, this advice comes in the form of a verse delivered to the 1977 graduating class of Lake Forest College by Theodore Seuss Geisel, better known to the world as Dr. Seuss - Here's how it goes:
My uncle ordered popovers from the restaurant's bill of fare. And when they were served, he regarded them with a penetrating stare . . . Then he spoke great Words of Wisdom as he sat there on that chair: "To eat these things," said my uncle, "you must excercise great care. You may swallow down what's solid . . . BUT . . . you must spit out the air!"
And . . . as you partake of the world's bill of fare, that's darned good advice to follow. Do a lot of spitting out the hot air. And be careful what you swallow.
Thank you.
Tucked away in our subconscious is an idyllic vision. We see ourselves on a long trip that spans the continent. We are traveling by train. Out the windows, we drink in the passing scene of cars on nearby highways, of children waving at a crossing, of cattle grazing on a distant hillside, of smoke pouring from a power plant, of row upon row of corn and wheat, of flatlands and valleys, of mountains and rolling hillsides, of city skylines and village halls.
But uppermost in our minds is the final destination. On a certain day at a certain hour, we will pull into the station. Bands will be playing and flags waving. Once we get there, so many wonderful dreams will come true and the pieces of our lives will fit together like a completed jigsaw puzzle. How restlessly we pace the aisles, damning the minutes for loitering --waiting, waiting, waiting for the station.
Sooner or later, we must realize there is no station, no one place to arrive at once and for all. The true joy of life is the trip. The station is only a dream. It constantly outdistances us.
"Relish the moment " is a good motto, especially when coupled with Psalm 118:24:"This is the day which the Lord hath made;we will rejoice and be glad in it. " It isn't the burdens of today that drive men mad. It is the regrets over yesterday and the fear of tomorrow. Regret and fear are twin thieves who rob us of today.
So stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles. In stead, climb more mountains, eat more ice cream, go barefoot more often, swim more rivers, watch more sunsets, laugh more, cry less. Life must be lived as we go along. The station will come soon enough.
Saying goodbye to childhood,we step into another important time in the pace of young, facing new situations, dealing with different problems……
everyone has his ownunderstanding of young,it is a period of time of beauty and wonders, only after you have experienced the sour ,sweet ,bitter and salty can you really become a person of significance.thre time of young is limitted,it may pass by without your attention, and when you discover what has happened ,it is always too late.grasping the young well means a better time is waiting for you in the near future,or the situation may be opposite .
having a view on these great men in the history of hunmanbeing, they all made full use of their youth time ,to do things that are useful to society,to the whole mankind, and as a cosquence ,they are remembered by later generations, admired by everyone.so do something in the time of young, although you may not get achievements as these greatmen did ,though not for the whole word, just for youeself, for those around!
the young is just like blooming flowers, they are so beautiful when blooming, they make people feel happy, but with time passing by,after they withers ,moet people think they are ugly.and so it is the same with young,we are enthusiastic when we are young, then we may lose our passion when getting older and older.so we must treasure it ,don't let the limitted time pass by ,leaving nothing of significance.

Today is a holy day. Yes, it is our children's dream for a long time - June 1 children's day.
The school used to let us have a day off as usual (in fact, it was originally a holiday), but this time they were going to let us wear strange clothes to participate in various activities in the school. We had resisted all the time, but when we heard that there were prizes to participate in the activities, we actively participated.
This day, I saw a lot of people wearing a complete set of Marvel's clothes. Some girls were dressed in pink skirts and dressed as all kinds of lovely female characters in anime (although better than the original painting, but it can be seen in the past). However, I, as a young man who is keen on playing games, spent an hour in the school computer room after participating in all the activities, which is really a comfortable day.

Everybody wishes (hopes) to get money so that he can maintain his livelihood. In other words, money is so useful that it is impossible for mankind to live without it. For this reason, we have an interesting proverb. It says “Money can make the world go around.” In a word, money is more powerful than anything else.
However, money should not be wasted. It must be used for (some) proper purposes. We young men should form the good habit of not spending money in the wrong way.
December 4th, 20xx, will be the first-ever Wildlife Conservation Day. Our goal is to inform more people about this global conservation crisis. Attacks on rhinos and elephants are multiplying at an alarming rate. Species around the globe such as tigers in Asia are endangered. By some estimates, the black market for wildlife trafficking is rivaled in size only by the illegal arms and drug trade. The slaughter of endangered species robs communities of income from tourism, reduces biodiversity, encourages corruption, undermines good governance.
That s why we are training officials and educating prosecutors about wildlife crimes and helping countries strengthen their enforcement laws. But we can t do this without you. Please, join us. Become part of the solution. You have the choice to refuse to purchase products made from endangered wildlife. Together we can save these animals before it is too late. Stand up and speak out, and stop this trade. Visit the website . Take the pledge to respect and protect the world s wildlife.
good morning, ladies and gentlemen. i’d like to share my teaching dream with you. but before that, i want to say something about the beginning of this dream. in march this year, three teachers from australia came to our school. during the meeting, we exchanged a lot about education. i found that though we have almost the same teaching philosophy, we have different routines. what impressed me most was that their schools end at 3:00 in the afternoon and have no night classes. i can’t tell which kind of routine is better, but the sharp contrast made me think about a better education. the following is a dreamy school in my mind, in which there is no pressure but pleasure.
in this school, the buildings are well designed, close to nature. in the morning, children can read while enjoying the beautiful sunrise. in the evening, they can exercise by the lake reflecting the amazing sunset. in the spring, they can go to the wild, lie on the lawn, and watch the kite flying in the blue sky. in the summer, they can go to the forest, live in a cabin, and listen to the rhythm of the rain. …
students are free but polite and they respect each other. they can leave at 4:00 every afternoon, or perhaps earlier. they have the freedom to organize time. t
My dear friends,
Life doesn’t always give us the joy we want. We don’t always get our hopesand dreams, and we don’t always get our way1. But don’t give up hope, becauseyou can make a difference one situation and one person at a time.
Look for the beauty around you, in nature, in others, in yourself, duanwenwand believe in the love of friends, family, and humankind2. You can find love ina smile or a helping hand, in a thoughtful gesture or a kind word. It is allaround, if you just look for it.
Give love, foringiving it you will find the power in life along with joy, happiness, patience and understanding. Believe in the goodness4 of others andre-member that anger and depression can be countered by love and hope.
Even when you feel as though there isn’t a lot you can do to changeunhappiness or problems, you can always do a little —and a little at a timeeventually makes a big difference.
Hope is always available to us. When we feel defeated, duanwenw we onlyneed to take a deep breath and say "Yes" and hope will reappear6.
